The 17th Asian Games at Incheon will be officially known as the XVII Asiad and it will be take place between 19th September and 4th October, 2014. There will be 439 sporting events in all in 36 different sports disciplines. Incheon will be the 3rd South Korean city after Seoul (1986) and Busan (2002) to host the Asian Games.
How Incheon won the Bid to Host Asian Games?
There were two cities that were willing to host the 2014 Asian Games.
One was of course Incheon who eventually won the bid and another was Delhi. The voting was held at the Marriot Hotel in the Kuwait City, Kuwait on 17th April 2007 to decide the host for the 2014 games. While making the final presentation before the vote, Incheon made a new offer by raising US$ 20 million funds to support the three nations which have not won a single medal in the games and also the flight and accommodation to all the participations on its own account. On the other hand India did not offer any such thing. All 45 nations, then went for a vote and 32 members voted in favor of Incheon and only 13 members voted in favor of Delhi.
Official Slogan and Mascot for the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon
The official slogan for the 2014 Asian Games will be “Diversity Shines Here” and it was unveiled on 16th September, 2010. The slogan throws light on the wonderful diverse culture of Asia in its history, regions and religions.
The three spotted Seal siblings are the mascot for the 2014 Asian Games to be held in Incheon. These three seal siblings are known as Barame (Wind), Vichuon (Dance) and Chumuro (Light). As per the organizers of the Incheon Asiad, this mascot is also a hope for the future peace between both the North and South Korea. The medals of the Incheon Asian Games will have a pentagon shaped symbol which represents five ports of the city of the Incheon, they are Airport, Seaport, Teleport, Leisure port and the Business port.
