FIFA Under 17 World Cup

The FIFA U-17 World Cup is the 17th U-17 World Cup, which is an international football tournament contested between men’s under 17 national teams. The tournament is going to take place in India between October 6 and October 28 2017. It will be the first time in football history that India is going to host a FIFA tournament and it will be the first Asian hosted U-17 world cup since 2013.

As host nation, India will be marking their first ever FIFA U-17 World Cup appearance and also the first ever in any group level. With India, two new nations will also be making their first appearance in FIFA U-17 World Cup which is New Caledonia and Niger.

In this final tournament a total number of 24 teams have qualified from six separate continental competitions. The teams that have qualified from six separate continents are:-

  • AFC (Asia) – India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, North Korea
  • CAF (Africa) – Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger
  • CONCACAF (Central, North America and Caribbean) – Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, United States
  • CONMEBOL (South America) – Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay
  • OFC (Oceania) – New Caledonia, New Zealand
  • UEFA (Europe) – England, France, Germany, Spain, Turkey.

Here OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) has received an additional spot (in total two spots), while UEFA has received five spots instead of six.

There is one more surprising news other than India qualifying in a FIFA World Cup is that the defending champions of U-17 World Cup Nigeria failed to qualify for this edition of the World Cup. By failing to qualify, Nigeria became the second nation to qualify for the next edition of U-17 FIFA World Cup (The first nation was Switzerland after 2009 who failed to qualify for the next edition).

Six venues have been selected to host matches for this tournament.

1) Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium – Delhi

2) Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium – Goa

3) Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium – Kochi

4) Dr. D.Y. Patil Stadium – Navi Mumbai

5) Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium – Guwahati

6) Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan – Kolkata
