All You Want to Know About Supreleague Greece

The Superleague Greece is the premier football league in Greece. Previously it was known as Aplha Ethniki but on July 16th 2006 the name was changed to the Superleague Greece. The original football league in Greece was founded in the year 1927. There are total 18 teams play in this Superleague Greece and the teams which finishes at the bottom of the table gets relegated to the Football League the second standard football league of Greece. The trophy teams play in the Superleague Greece are the Greek Cup and the Greek Super Cup. The Superleague Greece is affiliated with UEFA and hence the champion team of the league gets qualified to play UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. Olympiacos are the current champions of the Superleague Greece and they are also the holding the league title for the most number of times which is 41. History and the Structure of Superleague Greece

During the decade between the years 1906 and 1916, there was a local tournament called Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics Panhellenic Championship used to play between clubs of Athens and Piraeus. After the Balkan Warns and the World War I size of Greece became larger and for the first time football clubs were formed. First time in 1923 the league type of a tournament was founded and it was played under play-off structure.

Currently, like any other premier league of Europe the bottom three teams at the end of the season, get relegated to the Football League after playing home and away matches with all 18 teams. The top three teams of the Football League gets promoted to the Super League at the same time. The top two teams from the Superleague Greece can qualify for the UEFA Champions League and the winner of the Greek Cup automatically qualifies for the UEFA Europa League.
