History
The stadium is the center of the Area of Sports in the North Park of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Mönchengladbach . The area was considered to be the 1996 Ayrshire Barracks North of the British Army of the Rhine. It is located in the district of Rheindahlen land in District West .
After the groundbreaking on March 15, 2002, Hochtief began construction on November 13 of the same year. On July 30, 2004, the stadium was officially opened with a small tournament in which, in addition to Borussia, FC Bayern Munich and AS Monaco took part.
For Bundesliga games, the stadium has a total of 54,022 spectators on 37,873 covered seats and 16,149 covered standing places. As standing places are not allowed at international games, the capacity for these games is limited to 46,287 spectators. The maximum capacity approved by building regulations is 60,250 spectators, which is achieved when the south curve – following the example of the north curve – is converted into standing room. The stadium has 45 business boxes with 684 seats and 2,064 business seats. The audience is divided into two tiers. In the lower tier there is space for 35,067 spectators at league games, of which 14,079 in the north curve and 2,066 in the guest block in the south curve. In the upper tier there are seats for 18,990 spectators. There are also 194 press spaces.
In the Bökelberg Stadium , where Borussia previously played their home games, there was only space for 34,500 spectators, 8,722 of which were seated.
On the west side of the stadium is the administration building, which is also the main entrance to the 250 square meter sports bar. A total of 18,500 square meters is spread over five levels, which are located under the west stand. There is also a connecting passage to the Borussia-8-Grad building , which was opened on February 13, 2019. The building houses an H-Hotels hotel on seven floors , the new club museum, a new fan shop, medical practices, a rehabilitation center and office space. The investment volume was 31 million euros.
The Borussia Park area covers 264,000 square meters. Then are the stadium, the administrative building of the association with football boarding and restaurant at the Hennes-Weisweiler-Allee 1, the hotel with the built-in fan shop, the training ground and standardized on-site parking. The ten hectare training area is located in the southwest of the stadium. The site consists of seven large playing fields made of natural grass, a large playing field made of artificial turf, two football cages for training games, an athletic area with a runner’s hill and a coordination course.
The construction costs of the stadium amounted to 86.9 million euros. The stadium was financed with 7.65 million euros of its own funds, a syndicated loan of 43.45 million euros and a loan from the city of Mönchengladbach in the amount of 35.8 million euros. After Borussia had completely repaid the syndicated loan on July 31, 2017, it also completely replaced the municipal loan with two new bank loans. The two new bank loans resulting from the debt rescheduling totaling 48 million euros are to be paid off by 2029.
Borussia-Park is a category 4 stadium according to the UEFA stadium classification .
The stadium was selected as one of the venues for the 2011 Women’s World Cup on September 30, 2008 . Borussia Park was the tournament’s third largest stadium after Berlin and Frankfurt . There were two preliminary round matches and a semi-final match.
During the summer break in 2015 at the stadium were new HD – video screens in 16: 9 format and a new sound system installed. The two video walls have an area of 77 square meters (previously 51 square meters in 4: 3 format).
