Camp Nou Stadium

Camp Nou Stadium is one of the largest stadiums in Spain with a seating capacity of 99,354 seats. It was back in 1957 when this stadium was opened for spectators. Since then, it has also been the home stadium of FC Barcelona. The stadium is well known for hosting two European Cup/Champions League finals in 1989 and 1999.

Not only that, It has also hosted several other championships such as two European Cup Winners’ Cup finals, four Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final games, five UEFA Super Cup games, four Copa del Rey finals, and a whopping twenty-one Supercopa de España finals.

Talking about the FIFA World Cup, this stadium hosted five matches in the year 1982 including the opening game, two out of four matches at the 1964 European Nations’ Cup, and the football tournament’s final at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

History of the Stadium

Talking about the history of Camp Nou Stadium, it was built somewhere around 1954 to 1957. But it was on 24th of September 1957 when this stadium was opened for the first time ever. The match that first took place here was a match between FC Barcelona and a selection of players from the city of Warsaw.

Earlier this stadium was known as the Camp de les Corts which came with a seating capacity of 60,000 seats. This was a really small number of seats for the growing support of the club. Camp Nou Stadium generally consists of two tiers that had a capacity of almost 93,000 spectators. Earlier, It was first called Estadi del FC Barcelona, but was soon referred to as Camp Nou.

This stadium hosted one of the biggest matches in history such as the semi-final between the Soviet Union and Denmark (3-0), and the match for third place between Hungary and Denmark (3-1). It also hosted two Cup Winners’ Cup finals in the following decades, the first in 1972 between Glasgow Rangers and Dynamo Moscow (3-2), and the second in 1982 between Barcelona and Standard de Liège (2-1)

Back in 1990, Barcelona decided to convert all their standing areas into seating ones which in turn lessened the capacity, though additional seats were created by lowering the pitch. Before 1900’s Camp Nou had some of the standing area at the top of the third tier, but all of this was removed which reduced the capacity to just below 100,000.

When compared to Bernabeu, Camp Nou Stadium has changed a lot as several modern facilities have made their way to this stadium. Talking about the last decade, Barcelona have been thinking about either redeveloping Camp Nou, or maybe building a completely new stadium.

Moving on to the 2000s, the club worked towards renovating the Camp Nou Stadium. This time it was designed by the maestro Norman Foster but due to some lack of funding, things didn’t go according to the plan. After some time the club next started studying a move to a new stadium, but finally decided in 2014 to redevelop the current stadium.

Recent Developments

Camp Nou Stadium

Talking about the recent developments, they have decided to reconstruct the first tier of the stadium. This will result in a steeper tier with better views, the extension of the top tier over the whole of the stadium, the construction of a roof to cover all seats, and expansions and improvements to the interior of the stadium aimed at providing better facilities. With this reconstruction, there will be an increase in the number of seats to 105,000. This reconstruction work started in the year 2017 which is now expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
