When it comes to four majors of golf, The Masters comes not only first into our minds, but it also has greater respect compared to other three majors. Just like we have the Wimbledon tennis, we got the Masters in golf and just like we have the aura of the Center Court, we got an aura for the Augusta National Golf Club as well. Today we are going to know about the golf course on which golf’s most respected major tournament, the Augusta Masters is played every year. The course has seen everything from the first tee off to the presentation of that famous Green Jacket to the winner of the tournament. Let us know everything about it in details now.
Augusta National Golf Club – The Venue for the Masters
The Augusta National Golf Club is located in Augusta, Georgia, USA. It was established in 1933 and it is totally a private golf club and golf course. Of course it also has 18 holes, but it is used exclusively for the Masters Tournament ONLY!
The golf course was founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts on the site of the Fruitland Nursery. The course was designed by Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie and was opened for the first time in the year 1933. From 1934 the course started to host the Masters Tournament and since then it has become the only course which hosts a single tournament during the entire year and that also made the Masters the only tournament in the world which is played on a single course.
The Augusta National Golf Club never wanted it self to be ranked, but there were some of the rankings made in past, of course without the official backing by the club, and those surveys have established the Augusta National Golf Club at No. 10 among the world’s Top 100 golf courses. The latest such survey was done by the Golfweek Magazine in 2011.
The course had been in the news for all the reasons in the past like the exclusive memberships and until 1990, the course was not allowed for the black members. Once upon a time there was also a rule that all the caddies must be black and there was no woman allowed to become the member till 2012. In August 2012 the former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice became the first lady member of the club followed by Darla Moore. The club has always defended its policies by giving the logic that it is a private organization.
