Brief Information about Golf Balls
As the other games which are played with the help of equipments and the games which include balls, golf too has certain norms for the balls. As per the rules of Golf, a golf ball should not weigh more than 1.620 oz or 45.93 grams and its diameter should not be less than 1.680 inches or 42.67mm. Just like the golf sticks, the golf balls also have to go through a rigorous procedure before they can be deemed fit for the play and it should be approved by both R & A (The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews) and the United States Golf Association. Any golf ball (and other equipments related with the game also) which is not approved by these two institutions would not be allowed to use in any golfing competition.
Brief History about the Golf Balls
The current dimpled balls had to wait for centuries to come into the existence. The first ever golf balls were made of hardwoods and later they were made by feathers and other stuffs like leather pouch. Then in 1848 Dr. Robert Adams Paterson invented gutta-percha ball which was made out of dried sap of Malaysian sapodilla tree. It had a great feel for the golfers and it had a near round mould. The B.F. Goodrich Company superintendent Coburn Haskell of Cleveland found a rubber which helped the golf balls to bounce more and that was added into those gutta-percha balls.
The dimples on the golf balls first came in 1900s which gave further control over it and in the mid 1960s E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company invented a synthetic resin named ‘Surlyn’ and that was started to be used over the golf covers. But Surlyn was soon replaced by Balata which was more durable. In the year 1967 Spalding secured a patent for a solid golf ball from Jim Bartsch and Spalding improved the technique of manufacturing golf balls which was till now used by Bartsch. Since then the current golf balls are used.
