Interesting Facts About Women’s Tennis:

  1. Mary Ewing Outerbridge is the introducer of Lawn Tennis in the United States in the year 1874
  2. Marry Sutton Bundy is the first American woman to win the women’s singles title of Wimbledon in 1904. She won her second title in the year 1907.
  3. Before 1903 women’s tennis was used to play from the baselines only. Hazel Hotchkiss Wrightman introduced net and volley play in San Francisco and earned a nickname ‘Queen Mother of Tennis’.
  4. Althea Gibson is the first African-American woman to play at the prestigious USTA tournament at Forest Hills in 1950.
  5. Maureen “Little Mo” Connolly of the USA has the distinction of becoming the first woman to complete a ‘Grand Slam’. She won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in the year 1953. Only Margaret Court of Australia (1970) and Steffi Graf of Germany (1988) have managed such feat after Connolly.
  6. Martina Navratilova has the record of winning the most number of singles titles in women’s tennis. She has won 167 titles in all till she retired in the year 1994.
  7. Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova are only two women’s tennis players who have won more than US$ 20 million in their illustrious tennis careers.
  8. It was only the second time since 1884 sisters took on each other in a major final. In the year 1999 Venus and Serena Williams took on each other in the Lipton Championships finals. Venus beat Serena in that match.
  9. In September 1999 Serena Williams became the only American woman to win the Grand Slam title after Althea Gibson. Serena won the singles title at the US Open and one day later she teamed up with her sister Venus to win the doubles title as well.
  10. In the year 2000, Venus Williams won the Olympic singles Gold medal and won the doubles gold also teaming with her sister Serena.
  11. In the year 2012 30-year-old Serena Williams beat Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska by 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 in the Wimbledon final to become the first woman to win a Grand Slam title since Martina Navratilova won the 1990 title at the age of 33. This was Serena’s 5thWimbledon title.
