Famous Volleyball Players: Top 10 Best Female & Male Players Of All Time


In our introductory article for Volleyball, we have mentioned that Volleyball has a short but very interesting history and that means that it must have produced some of the famous players who have ever played the game called Volleyball. In the year 2001, the Federation Internationale de Volleyball or FIVB announced the list of the greatest and famous Volleyball players in both the male and female categories for the past century. This selection was made by 12 members expert panel, which went through the players’ top results, stability, personal attitude, performance, and technical contribution towards the game. Here is the final list announced by FIVB.

Regla Torres

Nationality: Cuban / Cuba
DOB: 12 February 1975
Three Olympic Gold Medalist

Regla Torres Herrera commonly know as Regla Torres, is a Cuban volleyball player who won her first olympic goal medal at an age of just 17 years, and in 2001, she received the Best Player of the 20th Century award. She was also included in the Volleyball Hall of Fame.

Lang Ping

Nationality: Chinese / China
DOB: 10 December 1960

Famous Women Volleyball Players

Lang Ping is a former Chinese volleyball player and is currently the head coach of China Women’s Volleyball National Team. Lang Ping was also a former US National Team Coach and led the team to win the 2008 Beijing Olympics Silver Medal. She is an Olympic gold medalist and 2 times world cup winner in 1984, 1981, and 1985 respectively.

Inna Ryskal

Nationality: Soviet
DOB: 15 June 1944

Inna Valerievna Ryskal a former Soviet Volleyball player for the USSR was one of the pre-eminent players of the ealy 1960s and 1970s. Inna Ryskal was a major player who helped Soviet Union women’s national volleyball team that helped them to domainate the world in late 1960s. Inna Ryskal is a 2 time Olympic gold medaist in 1968 and 1972, and a world champion, and a FIVB World Cup holder in 1970 and 1973 repectively.

Fernanda Venturini

Nationality: Brazilian / Brazil
DOB: 24 October 1970

Famous Volleyball player

Fernanda Porto Venturini or Fernanda Venturini is a former brazilian volleyball player. She represented Brazil for the first time in 1994 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix in Xangai where she won the gold medal and in the same year Brazil won the silver medal for World Championship. Fernanda Venturini is also a three time gold medalist in the World Grand Prix. 

Kerri Walsh

Nationality: American / USA
DOB: 15 August 1978

Kerri Lee Walsh Jennings commonly know as Kerri Walsh is a famous American professional beach volleyball player. Kerri Walsh represented America for the first time in 2003 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour where she won the bronze medal. A year later she resprensted America in 2004 Olymics where she won her first olympics gold medal. Kerri Walsh Jennigs is a 3 time Olympics and World Championships gold medalist.

Logan Tom

Nationality: American / USA
DOB: 25 May 1981

Famous Volleyball Players

Logan Maile Lei Tom or Logan Tom is a famous indoor and beach volleyball player. She became the youngest American player to be selected in the volleyball team for the Olympics game. At the age of 19 she played her first olympic game in the 2000 Olympic in Sydney. She has been an integral part of the of the national team from 2000-2012 and have also helped the team to win the silver medal in the 2012 olympic games and was named as the best scorer. Logan Tom is a 3 time World Grand Prix gold medalist and has 2 olympics silver medals under her name.

Misty May-Treanor

Nationality: American / USA
DOB: 30 July, 1977

Misty Elizabeth May-Treanor is a former American beach volleyball player and also a former teammate of Kerri Walsh. She is a three time olympic gold medalist in beach volleyball with Kerri Walsh. Misty May has also three World Championships gold medals under her name. As of August 2012, Misty May-Treanor is also the most successful female beach volleyball player having 112 individual championship wins in her international and domestic competitions.

Paula Weishoff

Nationality: American / USA
DOB: 1 May 1962

Paula Jo Weishoff is a retired female volleyball player who represented the United States National Team. She was known as one of the greats in her time and also have two olympic games medals under her name: 1984 (Silver Medal), and 1992 (Bronze). Paula Weishoff has also won a gold medal in the 1995 World Grand Prix.

Rose Magers-Powell

Rose Mary Magers-Powell is a retired female american volleyball player who played for the team till 1984. While playing for the US national team Rose Magers have won two gold medals one in 1983 Pan American Games and other in NORCECA games, bronze medal in the 1982 World Championships, and is also a 1984 olympic games silver medalist. After retiring from the national team Rose Mary played for nine years professionally in Japan from 1984-1993. Currently she is the head coach at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville.

Yumilka Ruiz Luaces

Nationality: Cuban / Cuba
DOB: 8 May 1978

Yumilka Daysi Ruíz Luaces commonly known as Yumilka Ruiz is a former female volleyball player who represented the Cuban Volleyball National team. Yumilka represented Cuba in four consecutive summer olympics from 1996 where she won two gold medals and a bronze medal out of the four times representing the country. She also has seven more gold medals under her name for the championships like World Championship, Volleyball World Cup, World Grand Prix, Pan American Games, NORCECA Championship, and Pan-American Cup.

Charles ‘Karch’ Kiraly

Nationality: American / USA
DOB: 3 November 1960

Best Men Volleyball Players

Charles Frederick “Karch” Kiraly commonly known as Karch Kiraly is a former American volleyball player and is considered as the best ever men volleyball player. He could play both indoor and outdoor Volleyball with equal masterful control. Charles Kiraly is a three time olympics gold medalist and a World Championship winner. After retirement Kiraly coached the US Women’s National Team where he led them to win the FIVB World Championship by defeating China in the finals.

Lorenzo Bernardi

Nationality: Italian / Italy
DOB: 11 August 1968

Lorenzo Bernardi is a former Italian volleyball player and also a former head coach of the National Team. Bernardi started his carrer in the 1980s as a setter and made his international debut on May 27, 1987. With the national team, Lorenzo Bernardi has won 2 World Championship, a World Cup, 2 European Championship, and 5 World Leagues. Lorenzo has also won a silver medal when he represented Italy in the 1996 Olympics. Before retiring from the national team Lorenzo played 306 times in “Azzurri” colours.

Hugo Conte

Nationality: Argentina
DOB: 14 April 1963

Hugo Nestor Conte or Hugo Conte is a former Argentine volleyball player and is currently the head coach of Volley Cavriago in Italy. Conte represented the national team in three summer olympics and was also considered as the symbol of pride for Argentina in the volleyball courts for over 16 years. Hugo was well respected as one of the most intelligent and the best all-rounders in the world. While playing for Argentina, Hugo has two bronze medals in World Championship and Olympic Games under his name.

Renan Dal Zotto

Nationality: Brazilian / Brazil
DOB: July 19, 1960

Renan Dal Zotto is a former Brazilian volleyball player and is currently the head coach of the Brazil Men’s National Volleyball Team. Dal Zotto is one of the greatest indoor players to play for the Brazilian National Team. He made his debut for the national team at the age of 16 in 1976. With the national team Renan Dal Zotto has won an Olympics silver medal, silver medal in World Championship, and a gold medal in Pan American Games.

Katsutoshi Nekoda

Nationality: Japanese / Japan
DOB: February 1, 1944

Famous Volleyball Players

Katsutoshi Nekoda was a former Japanese volleyball player who represented Japan in the 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976 Olympics. In his olympics run for the national team, Katsutoshi won 3 olympic medals out of the four he played where he won a bronze medal in the 1964, a silver medal in 1968, and a gold medal in the 1972 olympics. Katsutoshi played as a setter for the Japanese Men’s National Team. Unfortunatley he died at an age of 39 due to stomach cancer in 1983.

Josef Musil

Nationality: Czech / Czech Republic
DOB: 3 July 1932

Josef Musil is one of the famous volleyball players who played for the Czech Republic in the early 1950s to late 1960s. He joined Czechoslovakian National Team at an age of nineteen which ingnited his career. With Czechoslovakian National Team Josef won two silvers and gold at the World Championships, two gold medals at the European Championships, and a bronze and a silver at the Olympic Games. Musil was also named as “Merited Master of Sport” at that time period by the former Czechoslovakian authorities and is also known as the highest honor bestowed upon the athletes.

Konstantin Reva

Nationality: Russia, Soviet Union
DOB: 10 April 1921

Konstantin Kuzmich Reva was a Soviet Union volleyball player who dominated the international men’s volleyball in the late 1940s and early 1950s. After finishing school in 1940, Reva was called up for military service and played his first international match for the USSR in the 1949 World Championsship. While playing for USSR Reva has won two gold and a bronze medal in World Championship, and two European Championship gold medals. Reva used to play as a blocker for the Soviet Union volleyball team and was also an exceptional all-rounder.

Tomasz Wójtowicz

Nationality: Polish / Poland
DOB: 22 September 1953

Tomasz Grzegorz Wojtowicz is a former Polish International who played for Poland Volleyball National Team. He made his debut for the national team in 1973. Tomas has won one olympic gold medal, one gold medal in world championship, and four silver medals in European Championship.

Gilberto Amauri de Godoy Filho commonly known as Giba is a former professional Brazilian volleyball player who played as an outside hitter. In the 2000s, Giba was regarded as one of the best volleyball players. Giba debuted for Brazil at an age of 18 in 1995 and played for the national team till 2012 Olympics. While playing for the national team Giba has 1 Olympics gold medal, and has won 3 World Championships, 2 World Cups, 3 World Grand Champions Cup, and many more. In 2016, Giba was selected as the president of the FIVB athletes commission.

Phil Dalhausser

DOB: 26 January 1980

Philip “Phil” Peter Dalhausser, known as Phil Dalhausser is an American professioanl beach volleyball player who plays as a blocker. While playing for the United States, Dalhausser has a gold medal in 2008 Olympics, has won a World Championship and has 4 World Tour gold medals.
